May it never be that we reject Jesus as the cornerstone of our faith.

  • When we add anything to our faith or let it deteriorate in any way, we are weakening the cornerstone of our faith and run the risk of rejecting Christ.

  • When we seek our priorities first instead of God’s.

  • The more we allow false ideas to creep into our faith or time of absence to wear it away, the shakier our cornerstone becomes and our faith

  • When we withhold the fruits of faith that God expects from us.

Our Redeemer Reminds Us to Repent (Luke 13:1-9)

Third Sunday of Lent, March 24, 2019

Our Lord Jesus has already demonstrated the great love of God to us in every possible way.

It is our Redeemer who reminds us to repent, the one who went to the cross for our sins.

Our repentance is not a burden or an obligation to be met. It is painful, yes, to admit our sinfulness, but it is a joy to know that our sin has been paid for in full.

So, whenever we see tragedy or suffering, we can be thankful that God has been patient with us. We can be reminded of our own sinfulness, and we can rejoice in our loving Savior.

Jesus Resolutely Goes To Jerusalem (Luke 13:31-35)

Second Sunday of Lent, March 17, 2019

When Jesus decided to go to Jerusalem, it was a resolute decision that he was not going to change.

It was only because of his resolution that such a journey happened.

Jesus was rejected by all and had no personal incentive to finish the journey to Jerusalem and yet, despite the widespread rejection, he still went to complete his goal of our salvation by dying on the cross and rising from the grace on the third day.

He is also resolute to gather all those who have rejected him under his wings for protection and comfort.

It is only by God’s grace that we no longer reject Jesus and remain under his wings for all time.

First Sunday of Lent, March 10, 2019

The devil tries to entice us with temptation. We don’t do so well against the devil’s temptations; he outsmarts us by coming to us in our weak moments or in ways we may not realize are dangerous.

Jesus is the triumphant champion. Because he is, we have nothing to fear from the devil. When we repent of our sins and our failures to say “no” to temptation, we go to a Savior who has been tempted like us.

May the Lord strengthen us in his Word so that we may defend ourselves from the devil’s temptations and may the Lord bring us joy in repentance knowing that we have a tried and true champion on our side. Amen

Transfiguration of our Lord - Last Sunday after the Epiphany, March 3, 2019

Some situations, some experiences are so amazing and profound that words fail to capture them.

It was just so for the disciples on the mountain of transfiguration.

It was good for James, John, and Peter and it is good for us to see the glory of Jesus, too.

So what does loving forgiveness look like?

  • It looks like Joseph treating his brothers well after they had so seriously mistreated him.

  • It looks like Jesus dying for a world of sinners who have rebelled against him and his heavenly Father.

  • It looks like you and me living lives that reflect Christ’s mercy and love toward others.

    May God grant such a loving and forgiving attitude to all of his children. Amen

Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany, February 3, 2019

Jesus sent his followers out in his name and with his authority to baptize and proclaim the gospel. That goes for you and me, his followers today, as well.

We speak with the authority of Christ as we proclaim the promises of God and speak in his name.

This is a sobering responsibility but it’s also comforting to know that we’ve got Jesus backing us up and doing the real work on hearts and souls.
