First Lesson: Numbers 11:16, 24-29. People of all generations struggle to overcome their sinful thoughts.

Second Lesson: Philippians 1:12-18. Paul rejoices that Christ is proclaimed by many, not just by him.

Verse of the Day: Philippians 2:10-11. At the name of Jesus, every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Gospel and Sermon Text: Mark 9:38-50.

In the Gospel for today, we hear Jesus, the one who does everything well, giving instruction and encouragement to his disciples.

Try as we might, we will never completely rid ourselves and our lives of sin, but we are to make every attempt to do so. We trust that Jesus has made up for our imperfect lives with his perfect life and by giving that life for us on the cross.

Faith in Jesus is how the sinful flesh is completely conquered and how every disciple finds their way into heaven.

Amen.
